Herpes zoster. Accelerates resolution of pain by reducing duration & proportion of patients w/ zoster-associated pain, which includes acute & post-herpetic neuralgia. Herpes simplex skin & mucous membrane infections including initial & recurrent genital herpes. Reduces risk of transmission of herpes simplex.
Dosage/Direction for Use
AdultHerpes zoster 1 g tds for 7 days. Herpes simplex infections 500 mg bd for 5 days (for recurrent episodes) or 10 days (for initial episodes). Prevention of herpes simplex infections 500 mg once daily. Immunocompromised patient 500 mg bd. Reduction of transmission of genital herpes 500 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to acyclovir or valacyclovir.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Ensure adequate fluid intake especially in elderly.
J05AB11 - valaciclovir ; Belongs to the class of nucleosides and nucleotides excluding reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Used in the systemic treatment of viral infections.
